Murphy's Law
The First Conditional
(1) Ask if anyone knows what "Murphy's Law" is.

If nobody volunteers, explain that once upon a time there was a careful American engineer called Murphy. He liked to say: "If something can go wrong, it will go wrong".

(2) Write this sentence on the board. Do students agree with it? Why / why not? Point out the grammar use and present new topic: the 1st Conditional.

(3) Talk about other Murphy's Laws, e.g.:

- If you don't save a file on your computer, the monitor will freeze.
- If you wear a formal dress, everyone will wear casual ones.
- If you find a product you really like, they will stop making it.

(4) Play Dominoes with these cards in small groups. When they are done, discuss the most interesting laws.

(5) In new groups: Ask students to write new Murphy's Laws, using the 1st Conditional.
