Crazy Food Shop
Some and Any
An appetising lesson plan on food vocabulary and determiners for hungry ESL students.
(1) Tell your class that they are going to read a text about a Crazy Food Shop. What food is crazy? Listen to their ideas, take notes on the board.
(2) Hand out these worksheets (one per person). The students read the text and color the food on the shelves.
(3) Write on the board:
- I have ... coffee.
- I don't have ... coffee.
- Do you have ... coffee?
The students scan the text to fill in the gaps.
Play "What is missing": The students close their eyes and you erase some or any in one of the sentences. When learners "wake up" they need to remember which determiner is missing.
(4) Say that you have a crazy shop too. Can they guess what food is sold in it? The students try to find this out by asking you questions, e.g.:
- Do you have any coffee?
- No, I don't have any coffee.
(5) Hand out the second worksheet with a task to draw their own food on shelves.
When the students are done, they work in pairs, asking each other questions and trying to find out what food is sold in their partner's shop.
